Down here in Dade County Georgia, we only have two weekly papers. One of them is Republican leaning, and the other one is, well, more Republican leaning. They don't cover any national news, just local stuff. But, it's usually interesting to see who's saying what about somebody else, or who's kids got busted for some harmless prank.
I always find the time to sit down for a few minutes to relax with a hot cup of coffee every Wednesday afternoon when the paper comes to catch up on the gossip. Imagine my surprise today to find this:
After my brother won his primary race for his County Commission seat in 2002, our Mom threw a hissy fit. For the rest of the story, make the jump with me.
My nieces are spending the night with me, and the oldest one expects me to explain to her tomorrow why her Dad's family is full of Democrats, and her mother is a full-blooded Republican.
I had occasion about 10 years ago to visit an attorney in another part of the state to consult about a possible medical malpractice suit. After entering his office, and being asked to take a suit across the desk from him, I immediately noticed a beautiful cherry credenza just to his right. And sitting on top of that credenza, in this beautifully appointed office, was a quart bottle of Miller High Life. We concluded our interview, and as I stood to leave, my curiosity finally got the better of me. "May I ask you a question?". But before I got it all the way out, he smiled and said " When I was a young attorney, just starting out, a pretty young woman came to see me. Crying, she told me that she had been arrested for DUI, but that she had only had one beer. I was outraged that such a sweet girl was being persecuted so unfairly.
The kids came home from school here Friday with a notice that there would be no school Monday or Tuesday. Then I saw on the local news that there were several more counties across North Georgia that had also cancelled school for at least 2 days. They are using snow days early, they say to save gas by not having busses running. My guess is that they are either running low on gas to keep them running, or the price of gas is about to break the bank on these financially strapped school districts, and they're just trying to put a good spin on the situation. It doesn't help that gas dropped .30 a gallon from yesterday until today.
Just for a little background, I live in Northwest Georgia, and the usual voting trend is red nationally, blue locally, and either/or on the state level. One of my brothers is the County Commissioner(D)from our district. My other brother is the chairman of the county Democratic Party, and also President of the Union where he works. In other words, the Yellow Dog tendencies of my family are pretty well known locally.
The owner of a fledgling local newspaper has asked me to write an opinion column for his op/ed page. Not just politics, but any topic welcome. He also owns a local cable TV station and AM radio station which features conservative talk radio programming. I gave him fair warning that he probably would not agree with most of my opinions.
It is always nice to know what people really think of you. As evidenced by the recent diary "Confederacy of Dunces", it is fairly plain that at least some of the "progressive" "populist" posters are of the opinion that everyone who lives in the South are ignorant incestual "bible thumpers". The Republicans, of course, have been telling us for years that this is the way you feel about us. Perhaps this explains the defection of so many Southern Democrats to the Republican party.
disassemble -- that means not tell the truth. _______________
All these years I thought disassemble meant to take something apart. Thank goodness I heard our fearless preznit give this definition during today's news conference. No telling how long I would have gone on being misinformed. Of course if anyone should be an expert on not telling the truth, it would be Preznit God.
