EPA to Bring Back Banned Pesticide Uses
Wed Apr 16, 2008 at 12:09:22 PM PDT
It is amazing what you sometimes get in the Federal Register. During the Clinton Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned several then-previous common uses of the three specific pesticides -- pentachlorophenol, copper-chrome-arsenic compounds and creosote.
Today, EPA announces they are revising their previous risk assessments and seek to re-register certain uses of these pesticides.
Texas NAFTA Highway?
Fri Apr 04, 2008 at 10:54:32 AM PDT
We've heard over the years about a potential push for a NAFTA highway that would run from Mexico to Canada. I think this has been blogged by TXsharon on this site.
Today's federal register of EPA notices of draft federal environmental impact statements contains a notice possibly addressing this highway.
Russian Steel Plant in Southern Ohio Will Emit Over 1800 Pounds of Mercury Per Year
Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 05:29:12 PM PDT
Ohio EPA just posted a Draft Permit to Install for the
"New Steel International" steel mill -- a greenfield facility- to be sited on the Ohio River at Haverhill, OH. This facility
is being rushed through by Ohio EPA to be built by MMK - America, a Russian firm.
0.91 tons or 1820 lbs of mercury emissions to the air per year.....considering EPA's Toxic Release Inventory for point source air emissions for year 2005 data (latest available), this source would have been the largest in the United States had it been operating that year.
Michigan's Impaired Waters - Granholm's MDEQ Obscures the Problems
Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 09:12:08 AM PDT
Crossposted from Enviro-Mich Listserv;
...
It is impressive how devoted the MDEQ Water Bureau
water quality planning staff is to the current Granholm Administration's goal of getting Michigan citizens used to living with dirty, impaired waters and violating the Clean Water Act in the process -- by being less worried through being unaware of dirty water problems.
While the Granholm political people, the top management in the MDEQ and the line workers in the Water Bureau would never
agree to it being described or cast in this way, nevertheless that is what is going on here with the year 2008 MDEQ Section 303(d) Impaired waters report just published on January 28:
