Sunday Puzzle -- a manga for all seasons

Sun Jul 13, 2008 at 05:58:18 AM PDT

Welcome to Sunday Puzzles,  a weekly Sunday morning diary filled with various puzzles which you can work on your own or as part of the weekly puzzle party.

Helpful hint: since this diary will likely vanish from the diary list long before all the puzzles in it are solved, you can Hotlist it if you'd like to be able to find it easily over the next few days.  (Or bookmark it in Firefox bookmark toolbar.)

Small request: In order not to spoil puzzles for others, it is requested that you not put any key information in the subject lines of comments.  Instead, write something such as SPOILER: cryptic # 5 in your subject line and put the information in the body of your comment.

This Week.  There's a Puzzle-In-A-Poll for a warm-up.  When you're done with that, there are plenty more puzzles waiting inside the diary: half a dozen Catch Phrases, a dozen By Any Other Name puzzles, a baker's dozen Cryptic Clues, and  the weekly Sunday Acrostic.

UPDATE: The poll got screwed up. Sorry!  Go here for corrected version.

Sunday Puzzle -- special "what will we do for a subtitle?" edition

Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 05:46:06 AM PDT

Oh, hi there!  Welcome to Sunday Puzzle for June 29, 2008.

It's good to see you here. I wasn't sure how many people would show up for the Sunday Puzzle this morning. Juliewolf will be back to host Sunday Puzzle next week; meanwhile, I'm filling in as guest-host again this week.

On tap this morning, there's a new Acrostic, a baker's dozen Classic Cryptic Clues, and a Puzzle-in-a-Poll. Come on down to the body of the diary and join the fun!

BREAKING NEWS!  As of early Sunday afternoon, the Acrostic is in progress and going well; most of the Cryptic Clues are solved, but a few are still left; and the Puzzle-In-A-Poll is still a puzzle.

UPDATE: As of 4 am Monday morning, all is solved except Cryptic Clue # 6 and the Puzzle-In-A-Poll.

FINAL UPDATE: Monday evening.  Stix and nonnie just solved the final Cryptic.  All done!

Sunday Puzzle -- summer solstice special, now with added cryptics!

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 05:40:12 AM PDT

Happy Summer Solstice, everyone!  I'm your guest-host for Sunday Puzzle today.

Let's see.  This week, we have an Acrostic, as usual.  That's a good puzzle  for solving communally.  There are several Catch Phrase puzzles, which are nice for individual solving.  And, especially for nonnie9999, this week features a fine selection of Classic Cryptic Crossword Clues -- including one dating back 49 years!

These are the kind of clues Frank Lewis has been creating for 61 years on a weekly basis for The Nation! (Now, sadly, reduced to bi-weekly.)  These are the kind of clues Emily Cox has been creating monthly for The Atlantic, and Richard Maltby has been creating monthly for Harper's, for the last 32 years!  And now, thanks to the miracle of shameless copying, you too can enjoy these intriguing delights!

To start the fun off, there's a puzzle in the poll. All that, right below the fold...

IMPORTANT UPDATE, Tuesday noon: The Acrostic,  Puzzle-in-a-poll,  Cryptic Clues, and  Catch Phrases have all been solved. All that's left is to figure out how to defeat telecom immunity and we can call it a wrap.

Sunday Puzzle -- For DKos only!

Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 05:25:09 AM PDT

It's Sunday morning, so once again it's time to Meet The Puzzle.  Neither juliewolf nor Tim Russert is free this morning, so I'm guest-hosting once again.

Last week stix guest-hosted and gave us an easy puzzle which only took us until Thursday to solve. I think you will find my puzzle this week to be even easier.

brief note: Some of you may remember that I said I wouldn't lie to you two weeks ago?  Well, I think I didn't lie to you again this week!  But with even guys like Scott McClellan being  accused of not telling the truth, it's getting hard to tell what truth is sometimes.  There may be a place or two in the diary where I may have been a little misleading, or implied something which isn't so. Why not join me after the fold, and judge for yourself?

Sunday Puzzle -- Would I Lie to You?

Sun May 18, 2008 at 04:46:08 AM PDT

Julie is away, so I'm guest-hosting again this weekend.

The main puzzle this week is an acrostic, but you'll probably find a few other puzzles as well.

For instance, did you know that:

DFRI   LET   DerViFRI
   T

It's true!  And there's more below the fold ...

Sunday Puzzle -- I'm b-a-c-k!

Sun Apr 27, 2008 at 07:39:04 AM PDT

Hee!   I'm filling in again!

The main puzzle this week is an acrostic, which can be found right after the fold.  For those in the mood for more, there are also some new Catch Phrase puzzles to be found immediately after the acrostic.

Acrostic fun, and more, coming up right below the fold...

Sunday Puzzle -- send in the subs!

Sun Apr 20, 2008 at 04:51:02 AM PDT

I'm guest-hosting the Sunday Puzzle thread this week, while Julie is off birding.

The main puzzle this week is an acrostic, but I've also included a smattering of additional puzzles in case the acrostic is too easy.

To get you in the mood, here's your first puzzle.  I'll warn you in advance, though: this one's a toughie!

PUZZLE # 1: Mystery Image!

Who is this woman -- and where did this image originally appear?

? ? ?

More puzzles to ponder, right below the fold!
