How to embed MSNBC videos in diaries and comments - one method

Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 11:37:27 PM PDT

>> See the Summary section for a two-step recap of what to do - the rest is a convoluted description of how I derived this suggestion. <<

From this Dallasdoc diary which referenced an episode of the Countdown show with Keith Olberman, some folks were attempting to directly embed the MSNBC video of that show in their comments.

As usual, directly copying MSNBC code into either a DKos diary or comment wouldn't work.  In most cases, iframes were found in the source - but, DKos does not explicitly support iframe tags in our comments.

So, I looked around and found an easy method that does work.

Note: I recommend use of a free Firefox Extension to determine the filename of any video you view on an MSNBC page.  If you know of another method, that would be great to offer.

Overall, suggestions to enhance the methodology would be appreciated.  Hence, why I'm writing this semi-techie diary.

*FINAL UPDATE* Dale Peters: The tragedy at DKos that wasn't?

Tue Jan 16, 2007 at 05:09:36 PM PDT

(For the historical record: This diary is a followup to a critical discussion which Torta launched on events surrounding what was previously shared with DKos, by others, about the private life of Dale Peters)

Ah, what tangled webs are woven.

People often exaggerate their history in small amounts, either idealizing or pumping up their travails without actually intending to deceive.  Not a big deal, usually - it's just the retelling of history through a minor filter of your ego or rewired paths in your brain.

That's different than having a compulsion or even nefarious goal in lying to others.

Essentially, an alias at Daily Kos, dale peters, became entwined with a newer alias, Janet G, as Dale's wife.  Their stories, revolving around themes of Military Veteran support and related political issues, became part of a larger mythos concerning her heroic past and eventual, sorrowful death in Dale's arms.

Things may not have been so straightforward.

US ports sold to corrupted US insurer . . . UAE profits

Mon Dec 11, 2006 at 11:47:23 PM PDT

The corrupted USA-based insurer is AIG.  UAE is going to realize a profit through their ownership of DP World, which currently holds the USA port operations contracts in question.

The sale from DP World to a US-based business - which was primarily "forced" by the enabling will of an unusually resistant Republican Congress to President Bush's desired deal - is reportedly worth over $1B.

The reason I specifically mention UAE in this diary is due to the evolving and swirling controversies related to their association with DP World when reports of this relatively silent deal came to light earlier in the year - it seemed a significant aspect of interest to many folks in the blogosphere at the time, so I desired to explicitly note their involvement within the context of this deal . . . and the resulting irony of their making a profit from the whole ports affair.

So, all that prior speculation and debate being kept in context, I suppose this might just come down to the following observation of Bush Republican politics:

Step 1: Create controversy
Step 2: . . .
Step 3: Profit

Ask not what Democrats must do for you . . .

Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 12:29:33 PM PDT

It's natural to be discouraged with politicians during stressful moments in election years.  The ramp-up in any major cycle will involve extreme displays of polarized proposals - in law, policy and rhetoric - by most candidates and their supporters.

I feel that this latest series of threats by the Bush Administration to our Constitutional right of habeas corpus, the necessary upholding of international laws covering treatment of prisoners and even the moral notion of whether the USA represents a nation of torturers . . . is mostly election-year politics.

With plenty of ass-covering and neocon ridiculousness, of course.  Sending the cultural assumptions of our electorate towards the "extreme right", relative to our collectively herded implications of what national security actually implies, can only help Republicans to further move future consideration of their insane actions into the realm of fabricated boogeymen and Daddy-Knows-Best policies.

Still, this is not a reason to walk away from our only realistic hope for turning around this tide of dark selfishness.

You eat those words . . . and pass some here

I may not revel in Lay's death, but it seems appropriate for anyone with adequate knowledge of the man, the company and their relation to the crux of why BushCo exists . . . to suddenly discover an untapped emotional outlet within this extreme event, opening a deep vent within our moral bowels where associations of this man and his ilk reside.  I believe it's related to why we are at DKos, supporting Democrats and general ideals that seem to go along with that ride, actually.  But, maybe things aren't so easily summed up.  Or, maybe they are.

More ruminations on flipping off people like Ken Lay at DKos after the flip.
