Atlanta: Rufus O'Terrill (Bumbot creator) for mayor!? (video)

Sun Apr 27, 2008 at 09:42:09 AM PDT

This isn't funny.

Homemade "BumBot" Wages War on Riff-Raff

Using the control and a walkie-talkie, he approaches the vagrants around his bar and a local day care center to inform them via the robot's loudspeaker that they are trespassing on private property. If that doesn't do the trick, he gets rough with the water cannon. Apparently the robot has been so successful that the owner of the day care facility wishes she had three more just like it.

Rufus O'Terrill, local idiot, uses robot to assault, batter, and recklessly endanger homeless people, gets some attention for it. Then he runs for mayor of Atlanta:

LIVE VIDEO: Obama interview at Indystar (update)

Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 12:33:38 PM PDT

He should be on any minute now...

Sorry so short... It's just a bunch of reporters sitting around awaiting his arrival. It's not that interesting. My commentary on watching reporters sit around and await his arrival would be even less interesting...

Just an open thread for the video.

Update: 14 comments at the Indystar site right now. 15 here.

Obama 2012. Yes We Can. Again. (w/video)

Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 09:20:10 PM PDT

This is from the Moveon "Obama in 30 seconds contest. If you haven't had a chance to check out some of the videos, you should... there are some great ones.

The day I found out I had a bi-racial child.

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 04:52:30 PM PDT

A few weeks ago I was talking with some people about Obama's A More Perfect Union speech, and the discussion led to a discussion of race in general...

It was one of those conversations that became a little heated, causing others who walk in on it to be taken aback. They weren't there to adjust to the slowly climbing temperatures.

At one point early on, a woman (white) said she had a bi-racial child. The picture in my head was immediately of her and a black guy. I've got a place for that. The bi-racial couple, a bi-racial child, respective totalizing definite articles intact. Carry on.

Later in the conversation, the woman with the bi-racial child said something about her child's father, that he was Hispanic.

"Whoa", I said to myself.

Cigna: "Next donkey. Line up for inspection. That's a good donkey."

See all the other happy donkeys?

From Insurance News (dot) Net, an insurance industry trade site:

New ''Wellness Score'' from CIGNA Can Forecast Health Risks Years in Advance

BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2008--What if you could see into the future and know more now about the things you’re doing – or not doing – that are likely to result in health risks and health care expenses down the road? CIGNA is giving its members the ability to do just that by launching its sophisticated, "next generation" health assessment and predictive capabilities.

It goes on to describe how vast majorities of people surveyed thought it would be beneficial to have in-depth assessments done online. They said they would follow online "coaching" programs to improve their future health outlook. Sounds fairly positive and benign so far. After all, I trust Cignachokegasp.

A Monument to Mummified Cats and Meditation of Sexual Ecstacy

Sun Apr 06, 2008 at 03:02:17 PM PDT

Supreme Court to consider Ten Commandments vs. 'Seven Aphorisms'
Must a city park that displays one monument also permit others'?

U.S. appeals court in Denver extended this free-speech rule to cover the monuments, statues and displays in a public park. It ruled in favor of a religious group called Summum, which says it wants to erect its "Seven Aphorisms of Summum" next to the Ten Commandments in Pioneer Park in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

...

"We're delighted that the Supreme Court agreed to take this critical case," said a statement by Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the conservative American Center for Law and Justice, which filed an appeal for Pleasant Grove.

I read Steve Benen's This Week in God regularly, and found out about this at his blog today. This is going to be interesting. There could not be a group more perfectly suited to make this point. It reminds me of how perfect Larry Flynt was to make the point he made.

Dueling Nurses, Dueling Unions

Redstate health care debate.

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 09:44:05 PM PDT

Inspired by diary Nyceve wrote, I put together a couple of diaries about what Pacificare was trying to do to 17-year-old Nick Colombo, which was to deny a potentially life-saving cancer treatment.

I wrote one about Pacificare's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sam Ho and used parts of a previous diary about Cigna's CMO, Dr. Jeffery Kang, then a short one announcing that Pacificare had caved.

I posted both of these are Redstate.com because I saw it as a bipartisan issue. I was posting the telephone numbers to Pacificare everywhere I could think of, and figured I would try Redstate.com.

It generated some interesting discussion over there, and quickly turned into a debate on a single-payer system. I wouldn't say I really changed any of their minds, but I at least got a couple of them to start asking the right questions.

Wingnut Analysis: "Barack Obama: 'Babies are just like STDs'"

Sat Mar 29, 2008 at 10:48:18 PM PDT

Barack Obama: "Babies are just like STDs"
By Feddie

I wonder if Senator Obama picked this rhetoric up from his pastor:

Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."

I look at Redstate once in a while. Just out of morbid curiosity. I usually just get a chuckle, sometimes a momentary case of nausea, but today I got reminded of something important about being a Democrat:

[RedState Update] Pacificare folds, approves life-saving treatment for 17-year-old Nick Colombo

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 10:00:11 PM PDT

Patient Revolt works.

Pacificare folds, just like Cigna did with Nataline. Hopefully this time it won't be too late. Say a prayer tonight for 17-year-old Nick Colombo.

Health insurer PacifiCare reversed its denial of advanced radiation treatment for a Placentia teenager, but the youth's supporters went ahead with a scheduled demonstration while waiting to see the company's decision in writing.

The family of 17-year-old Nick Colombo was notified last night that PacifiCare would pay the estimated $100,000 bill for radiation treatment at the Mid America Sarcoma Institute in Kansas City. The family is hoping treatment can begin by next week.

But word of PacifiCare's decision came on the eve of a planned protest, after news of the boy's plight spread and friends started helping raise money for the treatment.

PacifiCare, according to Liz Jacobs of the California Nurses Assn., "capitulated when (Nick's story) went all over the Internet."

Hot stock tip: Meet Pacificare's Doctor Ho.

Mon Mar 24, 2008 at 09:02:44 PM PDT

Here we go again.

Is it about one per quarter now? If this goes as well as the first did - maybe buried in election hysteria instead of Christmas (the distraction that worked so well last time) - maybe they can squeeze in two or three more before Christmas '08.

What a quarter that will be!

::

Nyceve wrote [another] very important diary today.

Pacificare denies 17-year-old cancer patient lifesaving treatment

Remember Nataline Sarkisyan?

Well here we go again.

We're facing an eerily similar situation.  A phone call from you may help save another child's life from the depraved indifference of Pacificare.  Who owns Pacificare? Who else?  UnitedHealth.

The family and the nurses are  urgently appealing to the public to call PacifiCare at 714-828-1821 or Tyler Mason, the UnitedHealth/Pacificare spokesperson at 714-226-3530 and demand they provide the care Nick needs.

It was my first news of this action by Pacificare.

Mukasey Keeps the Fear (and FISA framing) Fresh. CNN helps.

Fri Mar 21, 2008 at 09:49:09 PM PDT

From CNN today:

Mukasey 'surprised' by scope of terrorist threats

"It's surprising how varied [the threat] is, how many directions it comes from, how geographically spread out it is," he said.

The attorney general used the occasion to once again urge congressional passage of a measure to update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. An initial update, termed the Protect America Act, expired last month.

Referring to the national security briefings, he says: "The people I hear about every morning, their fatwas do not have an expiration date," Mukasey said.

Marines vs. Berkeley? (includes poll)

Sun Mar 16, 2008 at 09:11:49 AM PDT

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
If Berkeley, California were to be attacked, would the United States Marine Corps defend it? Of course. It's a ridiculous question. That such a notion would be spread through extreme right blogs is just as ridiculous, but it's expected.

SHAMEFUL: Berkeley City Council Attacks Marines!

Pull all recruiters and federal offices out of Berkley [sic], and cut off ALL federal funds. Including when they have any kind of disaster.

This language of fear and hate is repulsive but expected in the Right blogosphere. But this has much in common with words spoken and legislation written in the US Senate and House recently. Not cool.

Obama: Commander in Chief

Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 08:08:18 AM PDT

His answer (finally) to this question:

As the Clinton campaign continues to hammer Barack Obama on defense issues -- chief Clinton strategist Mark Penn tells the New Yorker that Obama is "not ready" to be commander in chief -- Obama will appear today with former secretaries of the Army, Navy, and Air Force (two of whom served in Bill Clinton's administration).

It doesn't say what time this is scheduled for. Does anyone know?

All biofuels are not created equal. Just ask Richard Branson.

Sun February 24, 2008 LONDON, England (CNN) -- The world's first biofuel-powered commercial aircraft touched down in Amsterdam on Sunday following a demonstration flight from London's Heathrow Airport hailed as a first step towards "cleaner" flying.

The Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 flight was part of a joint initiative with planemaker Boeing and engine manufacturer GE Aviation to develop a "sustainable aircraft fuel." No passengers were onboard.

Americans Hate Change

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 07:29:26 PM PDT

Tucker's right:

You know who hates change? Americans. They hate change, they don't want real change. [...] They want things to be slightly better or slightly more efficient. If you say to Americans: 'oh we're really changing things, we're going to abolish marriage for instance, or we're going to change the names of the days of the week, or French Revolution type change. They HATE that.

  1. Abolish Marriage
  1. Change the names of the days of the week.
  1. The French Revolution (1789–1799) was a period of political and social upheaval in the political history of France and Europe as a whole, during which the French governmental structure, previously an absolute monarchy with feudal privileges for the aristocracy and Catholic clergy, underwent radical change to forms based on Enlightenment principles of nationalism, citizenship, and inalienable rights.

One of these is not like the others.
